Winter decor trends you need to consider

With winter fast approaching (I know, we can barely believe it either!) now’s a great time to start thinking about how you’ll incorporate winter decor trends in your home. Christmas decorations will take precedence for the first half of the season, but what should you do with your living space when Santa Claus heads back to the North Pole? There are plenty of simple yet impactful style preferences and recommendations that can help you get excited about winter and ensure you and your family members and guests feel relaxed and comfortable when it’s time to settle in.

Here are few winter trends to get behind:

Layered natural materials for a cozy look
Nothing says winter wonderland quite like cuddling on the couch with your loved one during a snowstorm. The end of the year is all about embraces the colder weather, and layered natural materials can help you achieve this effortlessly, as suggested by home style expert Justina Blakeney.

“I expect to see the use of a lot of natural materials like wood, cotton, and hemp in the winter,” Blakeney told Real Simple magazine.  “Chunky knitted blankets, cozy throws and lots of textile layering will definitely add warmth and coziness to the home in the colder months.”

Be mindful of comforting scents
For many, a night spent indoors during a snowstorm simply isn’t complete without candles lit throughout the home. Instead of opting for the traditional holiday fragrances like pine, cinnamon and pumpkin, Blakeney recommended opting for scents that are not only comforting but also promote overall wellbeing:

“Scent can really affect the feeling you have when you enter a home or a room,” Blakeney shared with Real Simple. “Lavender is a classic, timeless scent known for its calming properties. I imagine it will remain a staple scent in households that are looking for ways to invite more peaceful vibes, especially in bedrooms. Earthy scents like myrrh, frankincense, and sandalwood are great for the winter because they are grounding, promote balance, and are the next best thing if you (like me) don’t have a fireplace to cozy up next to!”

Embrace wood elements
Wood accents and finishes have a way of providing a natural warming impact on your living space, as if you’re nestled in a comfortable cabin during a snowstorm. Now’s a great time to consider incorporating exposed beams and other interior architectural features into your design scheme. If you want to take an easier route to embrace this idea, consider a rustic coffee table, or picture frames made of reclaimed wood that you can hang throughout the home.

“Natural elements are those elements that have been produced by nature without the intervention by man,” said David Haseley, Sr. VP of Marketing and Merchandising at Decorating Den Interiors. “One of the reasons we love nature so much is our inherent connection to the outdoors. There is no better way to connect to our love of outdoor spaces than incorporating natural elements like wood, stone, hammered metals and raw, organic textiles into our interiors and exteriors The use of natural elements in design is not only on-trend, they’re also versatile, calming and timeless.”

Emphasize your fireplace
Your fireplace can be a lovely focal point throughout the year, but winter is when this piece takes center stage. Make a statement with your fireplace by paying extra attention to the mantel this year. Once it’s time to put away the Christmas decor, continue to follow the winter theme and make the fireplace a space that guests can’t wait to cuddle around. Even if you don’t light your fireplace on a regular basis, winter offers a great opportunity to make the illusion that you do; place a wicker basket of cozy blankets, a bundle of firewood and a collection of coffee mugs here to emphasize the spirit of the season.
